Join CERF+ in welcoming Jenifer Simon who joined the staff on March 28 as Director of Programs. Jenifer brings more than 16 years of experience as an arts administrator, educator, evaluator, researcher, and training and development specialist for the public and private sectors. She has directed arts education programs, created training and career services to support artists throughout their careers, and conceived of Art Cart: Saving the Legacy, an initiative that provides support to aging artists to preserve their life's work. She received her master’s degree in Arts Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art from Skidmore College.

Jenifer Simon follows Craig Nutt who is returning to his studio practice full time in April after ten years working at CERF+. “I’m excited about the experience and energy Jenifer brings to CERF+,” Craig says. “She is the right person to take our programs to the next level.” http://craftemergency.org/

Clemson’s First Master of Fine Arts in Art Graduate, Jeanet Dreskin, Gives Back

Jeanet Dreskin not only created the groundwork for students in the Master of Fine Arts program today, but she also started an endowment to support graduate students participating in Clemson’s study abroad programs.

The Museum offers internships for current undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates. High-school students may also be considered. Internships are available during the summer, spring and fall semesters, as well as during the academic year.

While limited stipends are available (see below), most departmental internships are unpaid. We are always happy to coordinate with academic programs as needed to ensure due credit is received by current students.

2. Letter of interest: A 1 – 2 page letter indicating why you are applying for an internship at the Asheville Art Museum, your specific interest in and/or skills related to the internship(s) for which you are applying, and what you hope to contribute during your internship
3. Writing sample: A 3 – 5 page paper from a class related to the internship(s) for which you are applying
4. References: Internship program reference forms from two professional, educational, or character references in support of your application. (These forms may also be submitted by the reference directly to the Museum.)
5. Transcript(s): Official or unofficial transcripts from each college or university attended
6. Current resume or CV (optional)

Priority application deadlines are March 1 (summer), July 1 (fall semester or academic year), and November 1 (spring semester). Applications received after these dates may be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Jenny Hutchinson, Clemson University MFA in Art Alumna, Named The Hyde’s New Museum Educator

Jenny Hutchinson, a native of Queensbury, has been appointed the new head of Museum Education at The Hyde Collection.

In this role, Hutchinson will design and grow The Hyde’s full slate of educational and public programs, which includes workshops, lectures, drop-in sessions, tours, demonstrations, and community outreach. These programs serve a wide range of audiences, including children, adults, families, and students.

Since the start of 2016, The Hyde has experienced a 41% percent growth in visitorship. Building on this momentum, Hutchinson will focus on creating new opportunities to engage visitors through programs that enhance the level of understanding and relevance of the Museum’s collections and special exhibitions.

“We are excited to bring Jenny’s enthusiasm and talent to The Hyde,” said director Erin Coe. “Her experience in the arts community, and in developing exceptional programs for the public to create and enjoy visual art, is vital to the educational mission of our museum.”

For the past six years, Hutchinson has served as Gallery Curator and Program and Marketing Coordinator at the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC), where she represented more than 200 artists each year through exhibits at the Lapham Gallery. She also created the current LARAC brand and logo while coordinating a diverse schedule of arts and cultural events and programs for artists and the community. She expanded the gallery’s reach to include national artists, created programs for artists of all ages, and showcased a variety of traditional mediums along with new media. She brought renowned artists such as Sigmund Abeles to Glens Falls, and she developed the collaborative 120° Intercollegiate Art Regional, which introduced art students to professional practice and local opportunities.

“The Hyde has an incredible collection and we are fortunate to have such significant works of art available to our community right here in our own backyard,” said Hutchinson. “Working in the arts community in Glens Falls is my passion, and I'm encouraged by its increasingly vibrant arts atmosphere. I look forward to being part of The Hyde's innovative and knowledgeable team, bringing with me the respect I have for this community and its artists.”

Hutchinson has taught design and drawing at SUNY Adirondack for the past four years, and she is a contributing member to the newly formed Arts District of Glens Falls. A professional artist living in Glens Falls, she specializes in oil painting and drawing.

Hutchinson earned an MFA from Clemson University and a BA from SUNY Plattsburgh. She assumes her new duties as Museum Educator on April 18.

Help Art Department Clemson University MFA Alum Brent Pafford Take Advantage of the Anderson Ranch Presidential Scholarship He Secured!

Brent Pafford, Clemson University MFA Alum (ceramics emphasis 2014), has been offered a Presidential Scholarship to attend a workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in the summer of 2016. He plans to register for "Make. Eat. Think: the art of breaking bread" - with Alleghany Meadows - an artists Brent has been following since he started making pots - and Guest Chef Mark Fischer.  To help him achieve his goal, he has started a Go Fund Me campaign! 

Alleghany Meadows is founder of the Artstream Nomadic Gallery and Artstream Library. The focus of this lending library is "The Artstream Ceramic Library is a social-outreach project whose mission is to connect contemporary functional ceramics with ordinary people. Similar in structure to a literature-based library, the Ceramic Library loans out unique handmade cups made by thirteen nationally-known potters, for a period of seven days." 

Alleghany was a visiting artist at Clemson Univeristy through planning and funding provided by the Clemson Ceramics Association  in 2014. During his stay at Clemson he workshopped and met with students individually, approaching conversations with professional experience and genuine interest. His constructive criticism, depth of knowledge in the field, and advice to Brent to "clean out" his studio had an extensive impact on the direction of his work before moving into his thesis and projects thereafter. 

Brent has recently worked with two great artists, Adrienne Litchliter and Lindsey Byrd, to bring Southern Intentions: Prints, Pots, & Provisions to life in the past year. Southern Intentions is an art and dining collaboration between a printmaker, a potter, and a chef that integrates art practice into the experience of Southern dining. The concept of this course - "to combine two great artistic endeavours to focus on ceramic art for the modern-day dining experience" - will propel and strengthen Brent's studio practice, allowing for new conceptual developments, materials research, and explorations of form and process. And, most importantly, it will support his professional trajectory into full time studio "potter(dom)." Now to the nitty gritty - what is he asking from you, dear reader?

Anderson Ranch Presidential Scholarship allocated funds cover half of the tuition of the course totaling $737.50.

Funds Needed:
1/2 Tuition - $737.50
Flights, DC to Aspen and return - $592.00 (as of 3/23/16)
Lodging/Meals at Anderson Ranch (for 2 weeks) - $990.00
Missed income while attending workshop (includes utilities, rent, studio rent, insurance at home) - $500.00
Total - $2,819.50

On March 23rd, Brent learned that he was awarded the scholarship to attend his selected course. This means he needs to raise the funds by April 1, 2016! If he does not reach his goal by April 1, Anderson Ranch will award the allocated scholarship funds to another recipient.

This opportunity is a dream come true for him: He has followed Alleghany's work since first seeing it stapled to a cork board wall outside the ceramics studio at Winthrop University where he studied under Jim Connell and Ingrid Bathe. As he develop as an artist he continued to look at Alleghany's work and practices as a source of inspiration.

AWAKENING IV: CALL FOR ARTISTS

Enough Pie invites artists to submit an application to participate in AWAKENING IV: INDIGO (June 4, 2016), a half-day collaborative arts experience that actively engages the public park at the Joseph Floyd Manor on Upper King Street. AWAKENING IV: INDIGO is rooted in the art, culture, science, history and sacred nature of INDIGO and its long relationship to the Lowcountry.

On June 4, Enough Pie will launch VAT SHACK at AWAKENING IV: INDIGO. VAT SHACK is the first ever public mobile indigo dye space to offer hands-on experiences with indigo. The VAT SHACK is an off-the-grid, sustainable mobile shack that will engage local residents and bring new creative communities into the Upper Peninsula for collaborations and connections.

AWAKENING IV: INDIGO invites you to be inspired by indigo! Our fourth annual AWAKENING on June 4thfrom 4-9pm will be a celebration of INDIGO — both the VAT SHACK and artwork inspired by indigo. Performances, art, music, storytelling, and film will be showcased at this inspiring event to transform the park and shine an unforgettable (blue) light on the Joseph Floyd Manor.

All artists are invited to envision the site. This includes installing artwork in trees, throughout the lawn of the park, and along the chain link fence surround the site.

Create unique and creative community experiences during the event onsite, from guest arrival to departure.

Applications should demonstrate disciplinary diversity & strong collaborative efforts:

• Creative projects of any size or scale, including performances, installations and more, are welcome.
• Partnerships across disciplines are encouraged.
• All participants will have the opportunity to meet on site on May 6 to share selected project ideas and collaborate with other participants.
• Strong consideration will be given to proposals that represent the culture and voice of the Upper Peninsula.

AWAKENING IV is outdoors. Be sure that all materials used are weatherproof to the extent that you deem necessary. The rain date for AWAKENING IV is Sunday, June 5 at the same time.

AWAKENING IV will be a one-day event, free and open to the public, but there will be availability to view some semi-permanent artwork following the event.
All work outside the wall art must be temporary and leave no footprint on site.
No sheltered space will be available onsite but a proposal to build and create a sheltered space is feasible.

There will be limited power supply available for artists if needed.

In the project space, artist En Iwamura is hand-building simple cylindrical forms from raw clay directly on the floor during the NCECA 2016. Audiences can see and communicate with the artist throughout.  As each layer appears it will record different moments. The intention of the artist is to offer the viewer the experience of being at ant scale.


En Iwamura is a candidate for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Art with an emphasis in ceramics in the Art Department at Clemson University.  He will mount his solo thesis exhibition, On the Way/Far and Away, at in the Lee Gallery on the Clemson University campus from March 28-April 1, 2016.  A public reception and artist's talk will be held on April 1, 2016, from 4-6 pm.

JON RUBIN

MACAA is honored to have Jon Rubin as the keynote speaker for the 2016 conference at the University of Cincinnati. 

Jon Rubin is an interdisciplinary artist who creates interventions into public life that re-imagine individual, group and institutional behavior. His projects include starting a radio station in an abandoned neighborhood that only plays the sound of an extinct bird, running a barter-based nomadic art school, operating a restaurant that produces a live video talk show with its customers, and co-directing another that only serves cuisine from countries with which the United States is in conflict. He has exhibited at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Mercosul Biennial, Brazil; The Shanghai Biennial; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard, New York; The Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico; The Rooseum, Sweden; The ParkingGallery, Tehran, Iran; as well as in backyards, living rooms, and street corners. Jon is a recipient of the Creative Capital Award and a finalist for the International Award for Participatory Art. Jon is an associate professor in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University and Head of the Contextual Practice area.  www.jonrubin.net
